INDONESIA AND AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN POLICY
November 7th 2002
Addressing the Australian Institute for International Affairs (Queensland branch), Des Moore said today that it was important not to exaggerate the potential for Indonesia to become a threat to Australian security let alone to our external economic situation (less than 3 per cent of exports go to that country). The possibility of any conventional military threat developing is slight and, although terrorist groups are trying to disrupt the Indonesian government and society generally, they form part of the terrorist threat already facing Australian intelligence and security from various sources.
PRIORITIES IN AUSTRALIA'S FOREIGN POLICY
September 24th 2002
Expressing his personal view as a Councillor at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Des Moore today told the Australian Institute for International Affairs that the central priority of our foreign policy should be our national interest and, in particular, the values we regard as of fundamental importance to that interest, such as democracy, the rule of law, freedom of choice, and property rights. Policies that are not in our national interest should not be accepted simply because their rejection would upset supposed friends.
